seminar-CANON FOR FILIATORY SEQUENCE:

Introduction:
The basic work of library classification takes place in the idea plane. The efficiency of a scheme will largely depend upon the theory of library classification used for work in the idea plane.


Canon for filiatory sequence:

The canon for filiatory sequence demands that the classes of universe of subjects in a scheme for classification should be arranged according to their degree of mutual relationship.Ranganathan has given the following two canons for this purpose:
1.Canon of Subordinate Classes
2.Canon of Coordinate Classes.

1.1 Canon Of Subordinate Classes:

In a coalesced array, if A1, A2, A3 etc are subclasses of any order whatever of class A, originated in one or another of the chains originating from the class A, the classes A1, A2, A3, etc should immediately follow the class A in succession without being separated from it or among themselves by any other class.

Let O be the Original Universe. Then the arrangement should come like this:

Let us denote "Original Universe" by classes 0(array of order 0). Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 belong to the array of order 1, and subclasses 11, 12, 21, 22, 31, 32 and 33 belong to the array of order 2, A coalesced array would consist of classes in the order of 1, 11, 12, 2, 21, 22, 3, 31, 311, 312, 32 and 33.


In a coalesced array, according to the Canon of Subordinate Classes, if 31, 311, and so on are the subclasses of 3, originating in one or another of the chains from Class 3, then classes 31 and 311 should immediately follow Class 3.

1.2 Canon Of Coordinate Classes:

In a coalesced Array, if Class A and Class B had originated in one and the same array and had been consecutive in it, then these should not be seperated from each other by any class other than the classes A1, A2, A3 etc having A as their common immediate universe.

Example:(a)

Consider the example (b), If, in a coalesced array, Classes 31, 32 and 33 had originated in one and the same array and had been consecutive in it, then these should not be separated from each other by any class other than the classes 311, 312 and so on, having 31 as their common immediate universe.

In this example, in the first order array, the three sons should be arranged as 1, 2, 3 no cousin brother should come in between them, Again the family of these brother divided, and the subordinate classes i.e., the sons of each brother would arranged with them.
